In the social sciences, critical longitudinal social science and census data accumulated over time is available through the Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research. The Consortium maintains a vast archive of social science data for research and education, with its collections heavily accessed by more than 500 colleges, universities, and organizations worldwide. As part of SDSC’s National Data Repository initiative, SDSC is working to host, synchronize, and update replicas of more than 1.5 terabytes (trillion bytes) of ICPSR’s data, providing a geographically distributed backup for these valuable national collections.
SDSC’s DataCentral with state-of-the-art data management infrastructure, staff expertise, 24/7 support, and Storage Resource Broker (SRB) middleware combined to provide reliable management, synchronization, and updating of ICPSR data in SDSC's archival storage system. In the initial phase, the ICPSR collection will grow to more than 1.5 terabytes. For maximum protection, SDSC maintains the data in a “dark archive,” with at least 2 copies on different archival tape resources. Data is maintained in the original format, and metadata or descriptive information accompanying the files is also stored. For more information see SDSC DataCentral (http://datacentral.sdsc.edu/) and ICPSR (http://www.icpsr.umich.edu)."
