Mitch is Professor Emeritus of Computer Science at U Alaska, Fairbanks, since 1983. We both worked at JPL 1979-81 and have been "tangentially" in touch since then. It was great to be able to park our rig Vivian in his & Dorothy's yard/driveway.

4 week RdTrip Australia 101pg OneNoteLog; 4 corners - Cairns, Noosa HeadsQLD, Exmouth/Ningaloo, Prevelly WA; 29May WaikikiRoyalHawaiianHotel; 30May DukesWSuzanne&RickW; 31May FlightSydneyBrisbane; 2 days Explore Brisbane, Spirit of Queensland RailBed to Cairns, lovely sleeper train for over 24 hours, seats made into beds by "staff" while we have dinner; 06June Glen dives GBR, Great Barrier Reed, on Reef Encounter liveaboard tour, 3days/2nights to reach outer reef; 08June take Kuranda Scenic Railway through Far North Queensland's World Heritage-listed wet tropics rainforest to town Kuranda on Atherton Tableland. Then take the Skyrail Cableway back to Cairns, gliding above the ancient canopy before descending to explore the forest floor.
09June, fly Cairns to Brisbane & spent night. Then pick up rental car to head for Noosa Heads QLD to stay at The Hastings, thanks OtisS for suggestion, for a while. Glen has good surf at the river mouth, I had short swim off the main beach. Drove to Noosa National Park, to take walking tracks that wind along the coast, through rainforest and open woodlands and across colourful wallum heath and sedgelands. Ran into surfer buddy from Encinitas, TimH, on the path. Next day winds shifted, as forecasted, so we head to The Australia Zoo in Beerwah QLD, home of the Crocodile Hunter, established by the late Steve Irvin, and still run by his family. I got my picture holding a koala bear, so cute but their claws really dig into you. Next day it was Kanu Kapers - Noosa Everglades Kayak Tour where we immerse ourselves in a pristine wilderness and explore one of just two Everglades in the world. I saw kangaroo in the wild.
16June Drive back to Brisbane Airport, for our flight to Perth on the West Coast of OZ. WA = Western Australia is a state of Australia. Brisbane to Perth is 5.5 hours, Perth to Exmouth Learmonth Airport, Exmouth, is 3 hours. Perth Airport to Exmouth Learmonth Airport, staying at Ningaloo Lodge Exmouth. Glen has set us up to Swim with the Whalesharks, big, beautiful, gentle and blue-pokka-dot mammals. "We run our whale shark tours from our Exmouth base from March to August and we do not rely on chance to guarantee you an amazing day. Our spotter planes ensure that we know exactly where the whale sharks will be, getting you to the action quickly and efficiently." Travel over VLF Harold E Holt Naval Communication Stn and learn of VLF, Very Low Frequency, communication w submarines WW2. This area does not allow pictures to be taken due to Australia Air Force rules. We got some downpours, but warm & fun. I loved figuring out the story behind Operation Potshot, WW2, US Navy.
21June Exmouth to Perth & rental car to Prevelly WA. Thanks IlonaEveL for Margaret River WA tip near Surfers Point, our rental from Mark & LeslieH. I loved walking past Riflebutts Reserve to check out Glen's daily session at Surfers Point. Many days here with visits to Darren & IngerK, Dr Gil's mates) along with MarkH Gnarabup & Jah Roc Galleries, stormy day breakfast at The White Elephant cafe. We've been on road 4 weeks, 29May to 30 June total, and ready to head home now. Drive back to Perth, fly to Melbourne, VIC - State of Victoria - for last couple of days. Hotel across from Flinder Street Stn, took Old Timey cable car to Docklands area & Costco! Glen checked out Crafty Square, rec from hotel desk. Saw protest march "No New Coal" and toured ACMI. Australian Centre for the Moving Image "ACMI would like to acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the lands and waterways of greater Melbourne, the people of the Kulin Nation, and recognise that ACMI is located on the lands of the Wurundjeri people. "First Nations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) people should be aware that this website may contain images, voices, or names of deceased persons in photographs, film, audio recordings or text." Hotel gets us to Melbourne Airport, then fly to LAX to SAN.
