Computational Science, HPC, and Parallel Computing
Computational science is now generally recognized as the third scientific methodology.
- Computational science enables verification of theory, calibration of experiments; cost savings, time savings; etc.
- SDSC is a national computational science laboratory
- Much computational science requires more memory and faster processing than is possible on workstations
HPC is now largely synonymous with parallel computing
- High performance computing (HPC) is the ‘high end’ of computational hardware (and software), for solving large problems.
- Parallel computing involves using systems with multiples processors to solve large problems. Most HPC platforms are parallel computers now.
