Executive Director Richard Moore Visits SDSU Vizlab and the EdCenter,
November 14, 2002
NPACI Executive Director
Richard Moore was treated to a day of high-end visualization demonstrations
and joined the EdCenter team in their bi-weekly Faculty Fellows
'synergy session'. |

Dr. Dave Warner provides an overview
of his pioneering work in applying physioinformatics ideas to
areas as diverse as curriculum reform and homeland security.

and Arts and Letters for lunch to discuss the important role played
by SDSU in promoting the use of NPACI resources. |

San
Diego State University Provost Nancy Marlin is named to the NPACI Institutional
Oversight Board, November 14, 2002
Nancy Marlin,
SDSU Provost for Academic Affairs, has accepted a position on
the prestigious NPACI Institutional Oversight Board (IOB). Nancy
joins an impressive list of academic professionals committed to
maintaining NPACI's leadership role in the promotion and dissemination
of high-performance computing resources within the academic community.
Nancy will replace outgoing IOB member
Pieter Frick, former Dean of SDSU's College of Engineering.

Member Kirsten Barber presents to the Long-Term Ecological Research Project
(LTER), Oct. 21,2002
On October 21, 2002, Kirsten Barber and former
EdCenter student programmer and now full-time DAKS Spatial Database
Specialist Ashraf Memon presented their work on integrating spatial
and non-spatial information using xml-mediation technology at the San

Former
ECCSE Faculty Fellow Eric Frost Featured in Online Case Study for National
Technology Dissemination Program
Why use technology to teach geology? Professor
of Geological Sciences and Former ECCSE Faculty Fellow Eric Frost has
had tremendous success applying high-end visualization and imaging technologies
to his undergraduate course curriculum at San Diego State University.
Eric has become one of several case studies performed by the Center
for Learning Technology.

On May 16, The Education Center on Computational
Science and Engineering hosted its Faculty Fellows end-of-semester presentation.
The ECCSE Faculty Fellows were able to present in a special venue this

Computational Science Olympics 2002 Winners have been chosen!!
A simulation for a practical application
of 'Parrondo's Paradox' titled "Separating Ions via Brownian Motion
and Electric Fields" was the winner of this year's CSO. This group
of undergraduate students used Squeak to develop their user-friendly

Larry
Smarr Visits New Hi-speed Collaborative Immersive Visualization Center
Established at San Diego State University
Prof. Eric Frost of SDSU's Dept. of Geological
Sciences, and Kris Stewart,ECCSE Director, hosted Larry Smarr, Director
of Cal IT2,and Tom Defanti and Maxine Brown from the University of Illinois'
Electronic Visualization Laboratory as they toured the new SDSU Immersive
Visualization Center.
The new visualization center is located n
the new Sciences Laboratory
building. The new 'viz center' will offer hi-speed connectivity
to provide researchers and educators an opportunity to explore and use
state of the art group-based visualization and videoconferencing technologies.
