8/17/97 - VERY DYNAMIC!

In 1995, the program began making extensive use of the Wide
World Web. Therefore all lecture notes and agendas are available
from the program's web site:

             http://www-step.ucsd.edu/step/

The materials from the 1994 workshop are contained in
/pub/stepinfo/1994workshop.

The materials from the 1993 workshop are contained in
/pub/stepinfo/1993workshop. The most useful subdirectories
are the directory STEP-notes the directory Matlab-Ex containing
preliminary MATLAB examples.

STEP = Supercomputer Teacher Enhancement Program

This is project funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF)
to explore how the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC) can have
an impact on high school science courses. The focus is on using
the staff, the researchers and the facilities of SDSC to enhance
COMPUTATIONAL SCIENCE activites in the high school classroom.

The development of the curricula materials for the first
summer workshop is currently underway and these materials will be
placed in this anonymous ftp site to help facilitate similar programs
at other High Performance Computation Centers (HPCC).

The program is adminstered by UCSD Extension. For further
information on STEP you should contact the PTEST office (534-0407)

The first workshop was held July 6-30, 1993 at SDSC.
The second workshop will be held July 11-29, 1994 at SDSC.

The program will run for 3 years with 46 high school science teachers
from San Diego county participating. The summer workshop will be
augmented with meetings during the academic year so that the teachers
will have a forum to discuss future plans, new ideas, improvements, etc.

Brief Description of STEP:

Supercomputer Teacher Enhancement Program (STEP): This three-year
$1.6-million grant from NSF is designed to attract Latinos, Filipinos, and
other underrepresented minorities to careers in math and science by helping
their high school teachers incorporate modern computational methods and
examples into their class curricula through hands-on training at the San
Diego Supercomputer Center. This program is being led by Dr. Kris Stewart,
computational science curriculum coordinator at SDSC and associate
professor of mathematical science at San Diego State University.

This program began with an intensive month-long workshop at SDSC in July
1993, which covered the following topics:

*       Introduction to C programming.

* Telecommunications and the use of the Internet for electronic mail
and file transfer (via direct Internet connections and over phone lines).

* Computational science through the use of cross-platform software
such as MATLAB (the teachers have Macintoshes or PCs on their desks; MATLAB
runs on those platforms as well as on Sun, SGI, and Cray hardware).

* Introduction to the staff and resources of the San Diego
Supercomputer Center (CRAY Y-MP, Intel Paragon, Advanced Scientific
Visualization Laboratory, and Computational Biology Laboratory).

* CERFnet, the California Education and Research Federation Network
(CERFnet has donated accounts to support the teachers' telecommunications
needs).

Follow on workshops will be held the summers of 1994 and 1995, each one
building on the skills developed previously.

This hands-on training will be complemented by periodic meetings of the
group throughout the academic years to share experiences and stay current
with new developments in computational science and technology.

This program is training 46 teachers from the following school districts:

Alta Vista High School & Rancho Buena Vista High School
