Despite a decade of investment by America's schools in educational technology, recent congressional and higher education reports indicated that the majority of the nation's teachers are not adequately trained to use technology in their teaching. An Advisory council created by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) in 1994, which included the late Ernest L. Boyer, President of the Carnegie foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, recommended that CPB use its educational resources to help teachers, librarians, teacher educators, and prospective teachers learn how to use technology more effectively in their classroom instruction. Dr. Boyer received both his masters and doctoral degrees from the University of Southern California.

The Ernest L. Boyer Technology Summits for Educators consists of four regional technology summits across the country: Pittsburgh, Nashville, Dallas and Los Angeles, with follow-up professional development seminars for participants and other long-term outreach activities.

The summits are designed to achieve the following goals:

The Los Angeles summit will have more than 200 participants from 11 Western States. The participants consist of teams of high school teachers and college/university professors of education.
