HPCCC

The availability of High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms greatly extends the class of solvable problems.

The NSF Supercomputer Centers are an excellent source of information on HPC use in both research and education. Extensive information is available via the World Wide Web (WWW) for example, the San Diego Supercomputer Center has information at http://www.sdsc.edu .

   • Showed a transparency of a xerox from G. Bell, "Ultracomputers: A Terflop Before Its Time", Commun. ACM 35, p. 27, 1992
   • Showed transparency of Fig. 2-1 CRAY C90 Series Mainframe Block Diagram (HR-04028-0A) - nice color details of CPU, Memory, Registers, Connections and such
   • Made the statestate that Supercomputers are the "fastest, biggest" at the current time - therefore I personally don't try to memorize the latest data on speed of the CPU, speed of the memory, amount and speed of data movements. I rely on SDSC to have an order of magnitude more computing power that is available on the "scientists" desktop
