Date: Fri, 25 Sep 2009 10:17:47 -0700 From: Jim Julius To: Kris Stewart Subject: IIT updates Kris - Here's some info to add to the IIT notes: FIT Center - What you had already is fine Media consolidation - Due to budget cuts and resource constraints, ITS is no longer doing media playbacks via the campus closed circuit television system. Faculty may check out ITS media titles from the ITS Checkout Counter for the remainder of the fall. Starting in spring 2010, ITS media will be merged into the library collection and available for checkout by faculty and students from the Library Media Center. Faculty needing assistance in playback of captioned media in classrooms not equipped with a caption decoding device should contact Rich Bakken of ITS (rbakken@mail or x42047) for assistance with this. ATI Update - The chancellor's office just released an updated coded memo extending most of the previous deadlines to June, 2010. The word is that these extensions are more for the CO than for campuses because a new coded memo substantially revising the current emphasis on concrete deadlines and requirements for ATI to a set of principles, processes, guidelines, and metrics facilitating continuous improvement and local control will be coming out sometime this academic year. Blackboard final grades & Portal integration ITS has begun working with Web Portal staff to facilitate an automated entry of final course grades in the Web Portal based on Blackboard gradebook final scores. This will be opt-in (not required) for faculty and will be implemented carefully and gradually, with ongoing opportunities for input from faculty. DE Guidelines - In the spring, the Senate eliminated the Distance Education Committee and its involvement in DE course approval. DE course proposals will follow the same course approval process; consequently some curriculum committees are now looking for assistance in evaluating such proposals. ITS staff (James Frazee, Jim Julius, Mark Laumakis) are happy to provide consultation to curriculum committees as they work with specific proposals or if they are looking for general guidance. There is a need to update the SDSU Curriculum Guide to incorporate more information on hybrid and distance courses; ITS will be working with the CTL on this. In the meantime, ITS invites inquiries and suggestions regarding the resources needed for more effective development and review of hybrid and DE courses. As an aside, there is a meeting soon on a new online curriculum approval software package SDSU has licensed. Here is information on the meeting from Rita Gajoli: The university recently licensed CurricuNET, an online curriculum development and workflow program. CurricuNET will be used to facilitate all phases of curriculum development and approval via the web. We have arranged to have the vendor provide a web demonstration next Wednesday, September 3oth at 3:00 PM in Student Services West, room 1560. We hope you will join us for the presentation. Please feel free to invite others that may be interested.
