Kris Stewart, Computational Curriculum Coordinator, to Present at MUSPIN

Kris Stewart, SDSC computational curriculum coordinator and SDSU associate professor of mathematical sciences, will participate in the Minority University-SPace Interdisciplinary Network (MUSPIN) annual users conference to be held in Maryland from October 4-7. MUSPIN is sponsored by the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the NSF and focuses on the networking needs of minority schools.

The theme for the fifth annual MUSPIN conference is "the 21st Century: Information and Technology Thrusts for Minority Institutions." This conference provides a national forum to showcase ways that computer technology has enhanced faculty/student development in areas of scientific and technical research for education. Stewart, program coordinator for the Supercomputer Teacher Enhancement Program (STEP), is familiar with the concept of bringing technology into the classroom.

Through STEP, a three-year long program funded by the NSF, Stewart helps to provide high school educators from San Diego schools with significantly underrepresented student populations the opportunity to learn about ways to incorporate computational examples into the existing high school science and math curricula--curricula that have evolved from the educational framework put forth by the State of California.
