Date: Tue, 25 Jan 2005 07:38:37 -0800 From: "stewart@sciences.sdsu.edu" Hello University Senate IT committee and friends, Welcome back to campus! I would like to schedule our first meeting for Spring 2005 and would suggest meeting on the first thursday of the month. 03feb05 10am I'm including a text copy of the postal mail sent out last month to the Senate Committee which included an SDSC Calendar and SDSC EnVision magazine from the San Diego Supercomputer Center. The text of the letter enclosed with these two documents suggested meeting on the second thursday of the month, but unfortunately, I will be traveling to Orlando FL for a conference on 10Feb05. Please respond with an acknowledgement that you will be able to join us next thursday. james - can we reserve SSW 2267 VTC room for our meeting - 10am - noon? Looking forward to hearing from you all, Kris Stewart ------------------------------------------------------------------ stewart@sdsu.edu 619.594.0491 SDSU/LA 073 www.edcenter.sdsu.edu Professor, Computer Science, San Diego State University GMCS 535 4-7243 Education Center on Computational Science & Engineering ------------------------------------------------------------------ ------- Forwarded Message Subject: Text of 13dec04 letter to Senate IT committee - campus mail From: Kris Stewart, Chair, IT Committee To: University Senate IT Committee (http://senate.sdsu.edu/committees/2004members.html#it) Hoffman, Bob Education Shin, Bongsik Business Kolen, Paul Engineer Seidman, Rob HHS Burkett, Richard PSFA Marx, Steven IVC Chie, Cyndi Staff Hudson, Laura Library Lyman-Hager, Mary Ann CAL Student representative (appointed by AS, not participating) and IT friends SubCommittee to draft Change of Charge Document Bob Cademy, Secretary of Senate James Frazee, ITS Director (Kris Stewart, Chair and Cyndi Chie) Re: Update from 09Dec04 Meeting Docs: Cyndi Chie 3 page summary of scenarios for single committee or two separate committees James Frazee PPT presentation "A Tale of Two Committees" We met in SSW 2667 and had a successful video-teleconference with Steven Marx, who was able to avoid the drive to campus from the Imperial Valley Campus. The two handouts listed above were distributed and a wide ranging discussion ensued on the role of this committee and the justification for the request for a name change to Information and Instructional Technology (IIT). At the end, a vote was taken and it was decided to request the name change to IIT and specify that there would two sub-committees that would consider topics more closely aligned to PRIMARILY Instructional Technology or PRIMARILY Information Technology. These subcommittees would then be able to meet separately, bring the results of their discussions to the full committee where a broader discussion could occur. As appropriate, the full committee reports would be presented to the SDSU University Senate. The Sub-committee to draft the change of charge (Cyndi Chie, Bob Cademy, James Frazee, Kris Stewart) was again asked to work together to write the final document to present to the Senate. We then began discussion of the membership for the committee and whether all members would vote. Some felt that the inclusion last year of "ex-officio" members to assist the committee in writing the Senate-requested "Student Email Policy" was so valuable to the committee that the campus Information Security Officer (Felecia Vlahos), Technology Security Officer (John Denune), Director of ITS (James Frazee), Business and Financial Affairs representative (Kent McKelvey), Library IT Director (John Ross), Student Affairs IT representation (not participating now) should continue their participation with full voting rights. Some in the room felt uncomfortable with providing a 3-vote block to Business Affairs. We began the meeting at 9:30am with the intent to end well before 11am. This discussion was not concluded before the ending time. I would like to ask the members of the IT committee to discuss with the constituencies they represent on the topic of "Expanding the Membership of the IIT committee" and on whether this means a vote. We did not select a date/time for our first meeting in Spr05, but the 2nd Thursday of the month seemed to work well this Fall04, so I would like to propose Thursday February 10, 2005 10am SSW 2267 (VTC room take advantage of SDSU technologies) Please accept the enclosed 2005 Calendar from the San Diego Supercomputer Center, which I have had the pleasure to work with for a decade and a half. Also the SDSC EnVision magazine, especially the article on page 12 describing a project of my lab with Professor Mitzi Kolar using the Storage Resource Broker. Attendance: Only Rob Seidman and Bob Hoffman were unable join the discussion due to previous obligations; Laura Hudson also was missed. The rest of the To: field above attended. ISO (Flahos) and TSO (Denune) were off-campus for CSU CSIRT retreat in Long Beach. Bob Cademy, Secretary of the University Senate attended. As did Kent McKelvey for Business Affairs. cc: (Kris Stewart starts to discuss these issues with her "peers") Jim Varnell, College of Sciences Help Desk Leland Beck, Chair, Computer Science
