Ethan Singer Apr 4 (5 days ago) to undisclosed recipients TO: Faculty and Staff FROM: Ethan A. Singer, Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs SUBJECT: Enrollment Management Update I would like to provide you with an enrollment management update for the 2012/13 college year (CY) and the upcoming 2013/14 CY. Before doing so, I want to emphasize that for official reporting purposes the university reports two categories of full-time equivalent students (FTES). The first category is California resident FTES which is our state-supported budgeted FTES. The university is expected to meet its budgeted resident FTES each year and there are financial penalties within a relatively small margin of error if that does not occur. The second category of FTES is comprised of out-of-state and international students. Out-of-state and international students pay both the tuition fee and non-resident tuition. There is no state-support for non-resident students. A first-time freshman enrolled in 15 units this academic year paid a basic tuition fee of $5,472 and non-resident tuition of $11,160 for a total of $16,632. These amounts will be the same for 2013/14. These funds generate an essential part of the university's revenue and are used to offset in part the loss of state revenue over the past four years. The funds provide instructional and support services for resident students. 2012/13 Enrollment Our San Diego campus spring 2013 resident FTES is 22,962 with an associated headcount of 25,973. The Imperial Valley Campus spring resident FTES is 536 with an associated headcount of 705. Our 2012/13 budgeted resident FTES target is 25,914 and our total 2012/13 resident FTES is 26,003. Thus, we "exceeded" our 2012/13 budgeted resident FTES by 89 FTES or .3%. Our San Diego campus spring 2013 total FTES is 24,854 with an associated headcount of 28,110. The Imperial Valley campus spring 2013 FTES is 536 with an associated headcount of 705. For the 2012/13 CY, which includes summer, our total FTES is 28,075 compared to 27,766 FTES in 2011/12. 2013/14 Budgeted Resident FTES Our 2013/14 budgeted resident FTES is 26,225, or 311 FTES (1.2%) above our 2012/13 target. This is consistent with the 2013/14 CSU base resident FTES growth of 1.2%. Still to be determined is the marginal cost state-support funding per FTES we will receive for this additional FTES. Fall 2013 San Diego Campus Undergraduate Admits and Projected Enrollees The average high school grade point average for fall 2013 first-time freshman admits is 3.82 with an accompanying average SAT score of 1154. These are somewhat higher than last year's average HSGPA and SAT scores of 3.76 and 1144 respectively. The fall 2013 average grade point average for transfer student admits is 3.26 compared to this past fall's average grade point average of 3.21. The diversity of our current fall 2013 admits is quite strong with first-time freshmen of color admits composing 56.3% of the total first-time freshman admits. In fall 2012, the percentage of first-time freshman admit students of color was 56.2%. The diversity of our current fall 2013 admits is also quite strong with new transfer students of color composing 51.3% of the total new transfer student admits. In fall 2012, the percentage of new transfer admits of color was 51.2%. We anticipate enrolling 4,269 fall 2013 first-time freshmen and 3,595 new transfers on the San Diego campus. In fall 2012, we enrolled 4,139 first-time freshmen and 3,460 new transfers. Summer 2013 Early Start Program The Summer 2013 Early Start Program will continue to be mandatory for all fall 2013, local and non-local, first-time freshmen who have not cleared their remediation requirements prior to the start of the Early Start Program. The dates of the five-week program are July 8 through August 9. Required remedial courses will again be offered online for non-local first-time freshmen.
