1. *When will the migration start? * This is a very important issue for many SDSU faculty members. Some courses are taught online and, in many of those, email serves as the only means of teacher-student communication as well as being a record-keeping tool. If email records for online courses get lost (or are inaccessible, or are corrupted, or whatever) mid-semester, faculty will be up a creek. So the timing of this really does need to be carefully considered. 2. What procedures will I need to take for the migration from my Eudora, Thunderbird, and Outlook to Gmail systems? (Simple, itemized instructions for the major variations being used on campus should be sent to all e-mail addresses 2-3 weeks before the changes.) 3. Will the migration keep my old "sent to" folder and archived emails on the webmail system to the new Gmail folders? What procedures are required for this? 4. Can we backup or download our current webmail box (sent, draft, etc.) before the migration? How ? 5. What kinds of email security protection and privacy protection can Gmail provide? 6. Why don't we follow UC Davis and first have the students switch to Google? (Why switch faculty email first?) 7. I don't like the interface of Gmail. Can I change the interface of Gmail to a traditional webmail sorting view? (Because it doesn't sort your inbox in a way that makes sense to me--it stacks letters in a thread behind each other and while they think you can see parts of all of them.) 8. Will our e-mails (with Google) be used in any way for commercial purposes by Google? 9. In the event that one has a problem, where do we direct the inquiry? ITS? Or Google's customer service center in Bangalore? 10. What happens to faculty emeritus? Faculty emeritus have the right to continue with e-mail services from SDSU as we have for years. Will faculty emeritus get assistance, what is going to happen? 11. Currently, we can either leave our e-mails on the server, or download them to our desktop, using our e-mail program (Entourage, in my case). Will that continue?
